A SKETCH OF MORNING LIGHTS
晨光素描*

Translated by Lisa Lai-ming WONG 黃麗明

Above me, the crescent
Lifts the cosmic curtain of light blue
A cream white posted on the billboard of dawn
In a distance, the rising sun bursts through the clouds
Painting on the awakening azure of the sea
A golden hallway

The mountain range like a fort
An unending wall of dark green in my back
Before me are newly sprouted leaves of Indian Almonds
Little curls that glow with tidings of spring
On the branches perch the barbets
Their cheerful chirps
Bring back to me the calls from the scented horns of lilies
And the translucent reflections from crystal dews

In the spring of 2002, a day is breaking at 5:59 a.m.
Let me forecast, or keep vigil
Be it the glamour of a prancing sun
Or the fresh, gentle morning breathings like yours
Both are part of a secret understanding between springtime and
me
With a brand new fountain pen
The mood emerges from the waltzing nib
And has the first poem’s musical movement signed

Only after all the ink is spent
Have I managed to sketch the tender enigma
That arrests me in the very instant of your smile
When it is 6:00 a.m., at sunrise
