A MING DYNASTY INCENSE BURNER
宣德香爐*

Translated by John J. S. BALCOM 陶忘機

I have been handed down for over five hundred years
To meet with you by chance

By way of inquiring, you tap me lightly
I answer
With a clear crisp ancient voice
You listen with your life, after over five hundred years
My voice is still unchanged

Of metal I am made
My will is as steeled as ever

The Ming dynasty was not bright, the Qing not clear
Everything in the world is false

I am the only
Truth
In the curio cabinet alone facing the ever-changing
Universe

Afflicted for over five hundred years
The burner is empty now
But where is that fragrance from, you ask
Actually, five hundred years of age is itself fragrant
A bronze patina is fragrant too
But the boundless void inside the burner
Is most fragrant of all
