TIME WITHOUT LETTERS
歲月無信*

Translated by John J. S. BALCOM 陶忘機

Letters were once a stream
Flowing over an incalculable distance
Savoring sometimes of sadness or happiness
The ways of the world, love, friendship
In the eyes the lamp fades
Then flares
The mood at this moment as inexplicable
As reading Tang poetry by night

Now, variations on a feeling are knocking away
On a raw, cold keyboard
Inserting Martian characters and lazy symbols
All feelings made neat and easy to read
So decadent hearts can amuse themselves
Input a forced helplessness
Input a seductive posture woken by spring
Input life at a loss
Then replicate the search for a friend on the Internet
While the cold, dim images on the monitor
Spread mockery from our imprisoned souls
