STAYING OVERNIGHT AT COLD MOUNTAIN TEMPLE 夜宿寒山寺*

Translated by John J. S. BALCOM 陶忘機

The evening bell had tolled
The moon was setting in the
Desolate dream of Maple Bridge
My boat moored
At the wharf in the misty rain of Tang poetry
Around midnight
Amid the indolent echoes of the temple bell
I went to bed, to my bosom
I clasped a stone and fell sound sleep
Inside the stone a fire was hidden
The snoring emitted a scorched odor
At the time I didn’t understand how
Holding a stone completed the process of nirvana
If form and emptiness are not
A question of choice, what are they?
Then I turned over and began to
Contemplate things sad and painful
Things unrelated to the stone
Up early, the monks were sweeping the courtyard
Amid the tapping of the wooden fish
Slowly the stone melted away
I wiped the tears from my face
So the day dawned
