URBAN CHILDHOOD
都市童年*

Translated by Zona Yi-Ping TSOU 鄒怡平

Childhood gingerly crosses the road
Rumor has it that a junior high school student brimming
    with excitement
On the way to register for classes yesterday
Was flattened into a sheet of crimson
Children who have yet to understand what death means
were left in shock, wondering if this were
a mismatched location shot for some television melodrama

The uproar of a heated mahjong game reverberating
    through the apartment
constitutes a loud and clear confession,
Hurling invectives and remonstrations against the long defamed     but still grand golden age
the schoolbag lurching with an arrogant morality
Only to foster prayers come redemption

A childhood spent
Secretly browsing online, thumbing through the family porno     collection
Romantic rendezvous at video game store crowded with spasms
Swollen with imperious bacteria
On afternoons sans the susurrus of cicadas
Has desolately and tremulously run its course

From the Chuang-shih-chi shih-tsa-chih《創世紀詩雜誌》(The Epoch Poetry
Quarterly
), No. 147, Summer, 2006: 101.
