Ching Hsiang-hai 鯨向海

SOLEMN ATMOSPHERE
莊嚴氣氛*

translated by David van der Peet 范德培

I’ve been living in a mental institution for many years
In the dark
Some people try to lay bare my true identity
My exhaustion is as thousands of tired fountains
Sometimes I pretend to be a child, grasping those crayons
    tightly
And losing myself in nature to do some sketching
Those things buried in the depths of my mind
They’ll never rot, not in a hundred years
I’m busy welding together those mutual dreams
The same Metro station day after day
Suddenly, paradise crops up outside the window
In this moment, if I control myself and don’t laugh
A solemn atmosphere settles
