WORRIES 心事二寫*

Translated by John J. S. BALCOM 陶忘機

       1
Would anyone believe you
If you say you have no worries?

A spider is spinning a web among the branch tips
Your worry already is entangled there
The question is — is it a vertical thread
Or a horizontal one?

Who says you have no feelings
Look, a drop of morning dew in the spider web
Is falling
Your worries are dropping away, fast

       2
Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing for quite a while
But there is no answer
That calculator in his brain
Is on the fritz
And his worries won’t go back to zero

Twelve years of beacon fires
Filled how many of the pages of youth
And the seven years at a far garrison on the sea
The three autumns of injury, coughing up blood
How can it be calculated using only ten fingers

And today he walks on a street filled with flags
He can’t make up his mind
What color he will be dyed
He simply calculates
The grocery bill after Typhoon Reb leaves
He knows very well
The ugly expression of the ATM

Calculated or not, it’s all the same
Life has to go on, that’s the way he sees it
