Slowly you swim near
Pressing close to the angle of my gaze
To express a scintillating salutation
Your thick fish lips open and close
Uttering words
Releasing rings of bubbles into the water
I can’t quite grasp your meaning
And so I lean closer
But your pupils open
In helplessness
And in the end say nothing at all
In the swaying of your soft caudal fin
I suddenly come to comprehend
Your semiotic gestures Through the glass
You behold a painting
In which waves surge inadvertently from the frame at the sunset
Time and again asking about what is happening
Across the sea
Where no news has come for ages

No sooner has the tenor stepped upon the stage
than a high-strung nerve in me
is drawn to the breaking point
to the highest vocal range
and kept there until the final curtain call
then and only then am I brought back to earth
with a sigh of relief

the clamor of the city
